Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 19 January 2024 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Preparations were completed for the winter 2024 eclipse season; the season contains 30 eclipses and runs from Jan 16 to Apr 2. Real-time procedures were executed on Jan 15 to prepare for the first eclipse: one to activate SCS 29 and one to dump and clear the EPS glitch counters. Chandra passed through the 1st and 2nd eclipses of the season on Jan 16 and 19, with nominal power and thermal performance.

An additional real-time procedure was executed on Jan 18 to enable SCS 92, 93, and 134, which are required to resume HRC observations. HRC observations have been paused since Dec 2023 to allow the implementation of an improved HRC thermal model.

A Chandra image release was issued on Jan 17 describing observations of the microquasar SS 433, at the center of the supernova remnant W50, located about 18,000 light years from Earth. SS 433 exhibits powerful jets that distort the surrounding remnant's shape. The image release combines data from Chandra, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), XMM-Newton, WISE, and radio data from ground-based telescopes. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of NGC1068, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Nov 7 and is coordinated with IXPE.
